10 Tips to Becoming a Great Athlete
These tips don’t require talent. These tips are what you can do to require that talent. Talent is 20% inherited and 80% earned. You must put in the quality practice to receive that talent. Athletes are fast because they have trained for many hours with great coaches beyond everyone else. Hard work and dedication can allow you to separate yourself from the crowd in becoming a great athlete.
Give Maximal Effort.
You are responsible for your effort. Be a person of action. Don’t be afraid to fail get up and try again. This is the only way to improvement and getting better. Don’t let fear defeat you!
Have a Strong Work Ethic.
Understand that being good at something doesn’t happen overnight. And people become great at skills because of practice. The great magician David Blaine talks about his work ethic in this video. Being great at anything requires the ability to stick it out much longer than anyone else.
Talent doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a collection of small things that add up over time. Don’t accept mediocrity and doing things half-way. Do them the right way without cutting corners and it will help you to be get better faster. Only accept the best reps. Understand that getting better at something requires 10,000 hours of doing the skill the right way and not the wrong way.
Don’t Be Afraid to Fail
Trying new things that are going to help you gain knowledge and skill takes bravery. You have to be willing to fall 100 times and get up every time knowing that you will master that skill. Giving up and quitting is a habit that you DON’T want to get into. Quitting is the easy way! Be that 1% that sticks it out when things are tough and your reward will be greater than any gift you could ever imagine. Athletes get better than everyone else because they are willing to endure the pain, fall, and get back up to do it again when all the other athletes quit and give up. DON’T GIVE UP!!
Being enthusiastic doesn’t mean screaming and being the loudest one on the team. It means being the first to get to the drill, the first in line, and being in front of the class. This kind of energy is contagious and can be a difference maker into you being the leader that are made to be.
Have a Positive Attitude
Having a positive attitude is easy when things are going right and your team is winning. Being great is about creating thoughts that are forward and looking to what could happen. Positive thinking can help you overcome obstacles, get over the loss, and look forward to a win. It helps you to improve faster and it can be contagious. But beware! Having a negative attitude and complaining is also contagious.
Understand that your coach wants the best for you! If that means running longer and harder than all the others that is what you need to get better and improve. If the coach doesn’t correct you something is wrong. A coach is there to make sure you do things the right way. Thank them for that! There will come a day when you remember those days with fondness.
Work Harder Than Everyone Else
Hard work=Pays off. Working harder than everyone else might mean getting to practice earlier, watching more video, or hiring a coach that can help you improve on the skills you might be lacking at. Doing 1 extra rep everyday can lead to you being 365 reps better than everyone else in a year!
Be Mentally Prepared
See yourself working hard, going to practice and succeeding at the skills that make you great, and getting the extra rep in the weight room. It will make it easier to work harder, give great effort, and doing the little things that add up. Visualize yourself in the practice, games, and try to mimic those situations. All great athletes visualize the situation before it happens.
Do it Right Every Time
This one definitely a top 3 in this list! Doing things right is one of the most important qualities to have. Do NOT accept doing things with half effort, half way, and cheating. It is very easy to do 8 reps instead of 10 without anyone looking. The road less traveled is the road that few people want to take because that road is very tough to travel. Don’t give in to temptation. Don’t settle for less than Great!
